2.1     Institutional Mission [CR]

The institution has a clearly defined, comprehensive, and published mission specific to the institution and appropriate for higher education.  The mission addresses teaching and learning and, where applicable, research and public service.

NARRATIVE

 

The mission of North Carolina Agricultural and Technical State University (N.C. A&T) is: 

 

North Carolina Agricultural and Technical State University advances knowledge through scholarly exchange and transforms society with exceptional teaching, learning, discovery and community engagement. An 1890 land-grant doctoral research institution with a distinction in STEM and commitment to excellence in all disciplines, North Carolina A&T creates innovative solutions that address the challenges and economic needs of North Carolina, the nation and the world. 

 

(Approved by N.C. A&T Board of Trustees, Feb. 16, 2018, and UNC Board of Governors, March 23, 2018.)   

 

The mission appears in printed materials and on the University's web site, including: 

 

a.      University Strategic Plan 2023   

 

b.      On p. 11 of the University's Strategic Plan that is available in print. 

 

 

c.       In all other printed and electronic materials that the university shares with its constituents and stakeholders, including page 1 of the 2019-2020 Undergraduate Bulletin, on page 16 of the 2019-2020 Graduate Catalog, and on the institution's website at https://www.ncat.edu/about/initiatives/mission-and-vision.php.

 

In all cases, the mission is worded consistently across publications, and is stated exactly as it was in the copy approved by the Board of Trustees and the UNC Board of Governors. 

 

The mission also fulfils the following characteristics: 

 

a.      It appropriately addresses the fact that we are a university, "An 1890 land-grant doctoral research institution . . ." 

 

b.      The mission addresses teaching, learning, research and public service, ". . . University advances knowledge through scholarly exchange and transforms society with exceptional teaching, learning, discovery and community engagement."

 

c.       The mission highlights our distinctiveness, noting that we are a STEM institution, "An 1890 land-grant doctoral research institution with a distinction in STEM and commitment to excellence in all disciplines . . ." 

 

d.      The university's mission reflects the educational programs and levels of degrees offered in the statement, "An 1890 land-grant doctoral research institution with a distinction in STEM and commitment to excellence in all disciplines . . ."
