NARRATIVE
The academic enterprise at N.C. A&T State University is led by the Provost and Executive Vice Chancellor for Academic Affairs, who supervises the academic deans. As shown in the organization chart provided, each Dean supervises the Chairs of the academic departments in the College, and the Chairs in turn supervise the Program Coordinators. In departments with more than one degree program, the Department Chair serves as one of the Program Coordinators and others are identified, based on qualifications. In departments with just one degree program or more than one in the same discipline (e.g., BS, MS, and PhD in Electrical Engineering), the Chair sometimes serve as the Program Coordinator for all programs. In all cases the Program Coordinator holds appropriate credentials for the role. In cases where the terminal degree of the Coordinator is not obviously aligned with the degree program, a transcript, with courses highlighted, is provided to help make the credentials clear (e.g., Animal Science, English and African American Literature and Construction Management. The Roster of Program Coordinators, with their qualifications, is presented in Table 6.2.c-i.

Each academic program coordinator is appointed by the Department Chair, with the approval of the Dean, who ensure that the coordinators are qualified for their positions. Coordinators provide high quality overall leadership for the respective academic program. The specific duties include leading the following activities: curriculum review and development, course scheduling, program and student assessment, student recruitment and retention efforts, and assistance with student advisement. Program coordinators also monitor accreditation standards, where applicable, and they serve on departmental, college and some university committees. The Program Coordinators all hold appropriate terminal degrees in their disciplines and were appropriately credentialed as professors.
Department Chairs and Deans are largely responsible for setting the specific duties of the Program Coordinators, who are supervised by the department chairs. University guidance indicates that one of the primary responsibilities is to lead curriculum revisions and updates in the major. An example of program coordinators’ job duties, in the College of Agriculture and Environmental Sciences is provided.
